Custom Surgical receives investment from Luminate NY

600.000 euros for the Munich-based startup by winning the Outstanding Graduate Award of the Luminate NY optics, photonics and imaging startup competition.

Custom Surgical's solution allows ophthalmologists to digitize any microscope with any
smartphone in a cost-effective and universal manner. This facilitates remote medical treatments, training of doctors or discussing examination results with colleagues in more difficult cases.

More than eight million blind people could save their eyes if they received timely treatment. The shortage of ophthalmologists, expensive medical equipment and inequalities across countries contribute to this. Their mission: access to healthcare by developing affordable and smart medical imaging solutions. With their Solution, Custom Surgical wins the Outstanding Graduate Award in the Luminate NY optics, photonics and imaging startup competition. This was preceded by an initial investment of 100.000 euros, which was granted as part of its acceptance into the six-month accelerator program. Now the startup will receive another 500.000 euros. In addition, the Munich-based company convinced the audience at the final event and also won the Audience Choice Award. This is awarded with a further 10.000 euros.

Federico Acosta, CEO of Custom Surgical:

The Luminate Accelerator Program was a game changer for the future of our company. This program opened several doors for our company throughout New York State. We were able to close deals with industry partners and customers in the region and, most importantly, be introduced to key venture capital firms for further investment. The support of the Luminate team and mentors has been critical to the success we have seen over the past six months.

Sujatha Ramanujan, Managing Director of Luminate:

Custom Surgical's technology has a strong value proposition in the marketplace and has been a crowd favorite because it can help address the increasing rate of blindness. It provides an easy way to record, store and analyze medical procedures, as well as robust training tools that help ophthalmic surgeons improve their skills, patient outcomes and early detection and diagnosis of eye disease.
